Summary
I have currently chosen to analyze and prioritize the career if being a professor, though I would prefer being a mathematical professor above all others. Professors use their in-depth knowledge of a specific subject, such as mathematics, to teach students at a post secondary level and this comes with many tasks in the jobs. Some of which would include marking papers, conducting research in their area of expertise, writing essays, articles, books, performing administrative work and of course teaching students in an university or college. To even have a chance at becoming a professor you would most likely need a PhD in the subject you wish to teach, and to achieve that you would need to study for another 9-11 years after high school in post secondary. While being employed in a post secondary institution you would on average be working 50 to 60 hours a week and summer would be used to researching and developing courses. People newly receiving their PhD's would spend 1 to 3 years working part time before landing a full time job. Earnings depend on a number of factors, including the quality of the professors research, the wealth and location of the institute, and the discipline taught. Rank and years of experience can also effect salaries. Most professors would start out at about $40,000-$60,000 a year but can make $140,000 or higher later on. In addition to their regular salaries, most full time professors receive benefits such as health care coverage and paid sabbatical leave, extended time off to travel, research, and write.
Thoughts and Interest
I am particularly interested in becoming a professor for several reasons that I had not really realized before I discovered the idea of becoming a professor. Thought this may sound greedy a large portion of why I want to be a professor would be the money, and extra wages I would make. To me money is very important and this would be a stable job to make exactly that. And on that note, stable-ness is also something I need in my life, and becoming a professor would be a realistic life choice which is something I desperately need as a base for a future. As I have researched writing is an extremely large part of becoming a professor and I have always respected people with literary skills and I have always tried to improve and perfect my own vocabulary. I have had a long interest in writing and having my work published so if that were to be helpful toward perusing a job all the better. Now in detail math has always been my strongest subject, and it is an are I am most comfortable in which would make it the perfect course to teach to others. Math is so easily processed in my brain because I think logically and I have also been told I have a great way if conveying that. Along with all this I have a passion for knowledge and I believe that everyone should have a right to some of that knowledge and I would like to be in the process of that. Though I currently lack the social and communication skills for this job, it is an area I would like to work on and improve over the years. I can honestly see myself pursuing a career in mathematics just because of my familiarity with the subject, though I will have my doubts of teaching but I hope to over come that and build on this idea.
